Creating EAN-13 barcodes with 'AVS Barcode Source' barcode image generation software

'AVS Barcode Source' can create fully-compliant EAN-13 barcode images, including the human-readable characters, optional quiet-zone indicator, and variable size quiet zones all around the barcode image. Settings such as DTP (dots per inch) can be altered, as can the overall size of the barcode image, colours used, etc. This page describes features specific to EAN-13.

For EAN 13 barcodes, a check digit is necessary. 'AVS Barcode Source' provides two ways of doing this - either the software can append the check digit automatically (and display it for the user to see), or it can be added by the user as part of the number - in which case the checksum will be checked by the software. Either way, the software will not allow an EAN-13 barcode to be created with a missing or invalid check digit.

Images may be saved as BMP, GIF, JPG, TIFF, EXIF, PNG or EPS (vector) format files. Alternatively, the image can be 'copied' directly to the Windows clipboard, ready for 'pasting' into another application.

There is a useful 'set to standard' option, which enforces the closest-possible match to the EAN-13 specification in terms of height and width settings. The software also ensures that the printer will not be forced to 'scale' the image up or down, which can result in scanning errors.

The images produced may then be used in other products such as Desktop Publishing (DTP) packages, word processors, etc. The software is not a label designer in its own right, but rather a 'source' of barcodes, which can then be exported and used as desired in other applications.

'AVS Barcode Source' can create a variety of linear (1-dimensional) barcode formats, not just EAN-13.
