'AVS Barcode Source' is a Windows application designed to create image files containing barcodes. The barcodes can be of any size, with configurable parameters for setting colours, bar-width, height, quiet zone (to left and right of barcode), space at top and bottom of image, and various other parameters. The images are suitable for pre-press use - various bitmap and vector file formats are supported.

Checksums are automatically calculated according to the specification of the barcode format chosen. Images may be saved as BMP, GIF, JPG, TIFF, EXIF or PNG format files - other DTP formats may follow later. Alternatively, the image can be 'copied' directly to the Windows clipboard, ready for 'pasting' into another application.

The images produced may then be used in other products such as Desktop Publishing (DTP) packages, word processors, etc. The software is not a label designer in its own right, but rather a 'source' of barcodes, which can then be exported and used as desired in other applications.

Barcode formats currently supported are: (follow links to read about options specific to each format)

• EAN 13
• Code 128 (supports all character sets, with intelligent compression to provide the smallest code possible in each case).
• Code 39 (also called Code39, Code 3 of 9, 3-of-9, etc)
• Code 39 Extended Mode character set (also called full ASCII Code 39)
• Codabar (sometimes also known as Ames Code, NW-7, Monarch, Code 2 of 7, Rationalised Codabar, ANSI/AIM BC3-1995 or USD-4).
• The 2-of-5 family, including Interleaved 2-of-5, Industrial 2-of-5, Matrix 2-of-5, IATA 2-of-5 and COOP 2-of-5.
• DataMatrix (or Data Matrix), supporting the popular ECC200 ASCII mode.

Checksums are supported where they are specified in the main standard. Note that in the case of Codabar, industry-specific checksums and variants are not supported because they are not standardised, but can be added on request.

Coming in future versions are further 2-dimensional formats such as QRCode, MaxiCode, Aztec, and PDF-417.
