'AVS Barcode Source' has very good support for the Code 128 barcode standard.
Code 128 is split into 3 character sets, A, B and C. These character sets each include different characters, as well as overlapping with each other to some extent. In particular, character set C allows digits to be mapped in pairs, saving a great deal of space for numeric data - this makes Code 128 very efficient for numeric data in particular.
'AVS Barcode Source' software supports all three Code 128 character sets. The software automatically and intelligently switches between the three character sets in the most efficent way for the given data, resulting in the most compact barcode image possible for that data. Contrast this with a 'barcode font', where this sort of work would have to be done by the user, or risk creating larger than necessary (and possibly invalid) barcodes.
For Code 128 barcodes, a check digit is mandatory and built into the specification. As such, 'AVS Barcode Source' automatically calculates and appends the check digit to the generated barcode. It is not possible to create a Code 128 barcode without a check digit.
When you are happy with the barcode image in the 'preview' window, you can save it in a number of different graphics file formats.
The images produced may then be used in other products such as Desktop Publishing (DTP) packages, word processors, etc.
'AVS Barcode Source' also supports most other popular linear or 1-dimensional barcode formats, including EAN-13, ITF-14 and UPC-A.
